When Do You Need a Lactation Consultation?
Lactation Consultations
We offer lactation consultations in your home by an international board certfied lactation consultant, typically lasting 1.5-2 hours. During the consultation, we will provide:
- A copy of "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" (8th edition, co-authored by Mahala lactation consultant, Diana West)
- Kind, gentle, and compassionate care
- A maternal breast assessment
- An infant oral anatomy and sucking assessment
- Latching and positioning assistance
- Tools and tips to help you breastfeed more easily
- An evaluation of the amount of milk the baby receives at breast(if appropriate)measured by a scale sensitive to 0.1 oz (2.8 grams)
- A determination of the probable reasons for the difficulties
- A treatment plan developed with your input to help you reach your breastfeeding goals (not ours), taking into consideration your lifestyle, limitations, and preferences
- Answers to any breastfeeding questions
- Handouts relevant to your situation
- Pump rental (if appropriate)
- Contact information for resources in your area
- A receipt for the service that includes the diagnostic codes required by insurance companies for insurance reimbursement
- A comprehensive report for your and your doctor(s)' records
